Lesson 40: Home: A School for Eternity

Parents and children spending time together

Teachers: The lessons in the manual contain more information than you will probably be able to teach in one class period. Seek the Spirit of the Lord in selecting the scripture passages, stories, activities, questions, and other lesson materials that best meet the needs of class members.

Elder L. Tom Perry  Elder L. Tom Perry's conference message conveys a sense of the Church's concern for the welfare of the family and of what the Church is doing to help protect our homes. He says:

"We need to make our homes a place of refuge from the storm, which is increasing in intensity all about us. Even if the smallest openings are left unattended, negative influences can penetrate the very walls of our homes" ("The Importance of the Family," Ensign, May 2003, 40).

Elder Robert D. Hales  In this conference address, Elder Robert D. Hales describes over 20 things that can be done within the walls of our homes to strengthen the family. Before listing these things, he makes this statement:

"Strengthening families is our sacred duty as parents, children, extended family members, leaders, teachers, and individual members of the Church" ("Strengthening Families: Our Sacred Duty," Ensign, May 1999, 33).

Additional Helps

  • President Thomas S. Monson said: "Leaders of our young people fill a variety of roles. Some are trained executives and secretaries in the world of business, skilled physicians and nurses in the field of medicine, or competent teachers in the classrooms of learning. Others have studied sociology, psychology, languages, or history. Many are filling the vital role of homemaker. In reality, each is also engaged in the building trade. The product: building a bridge to the heart of a youth."

Later in that same talk, President Monson also said: "How can we reach our youth? I answer, 'Build a bridge to their hearts.' " ("Building Bridges," New Era, Nov. 1985 [Young Women Special Issue], 63–64.)
